Crescent Sports was founded in 1992 by Herman Brame and Aleem Shabazz to be an organization that addressed issues such as lack of youth engagement and involvement in the Muslim community of Portland, Oregon. With both Brame and Shabazz being former collegiate athletes, they understood the important role that sport played in their development from their childhood years to men making contributions to their community. They both also recalled how playing sports taught them important life lessons, such as discipline, teamwork, respect for authority, and time management, but most importantly they remembered how it gave them confidence.

 

This is what they wanted to provide to the next generation. “Sports has a way of benefiting youth beyond exercise and recreation,” according Brame. “We wanted to use sports as an avenue give our youth keys than can open doors to an unlimited amount of opportunities to achieve success.” Since its inception Crescent Sports has provided a way to success for many current athletes both Muslim and non-Muslim alike. Crescent Sports, through its various programs and services has provided youth in the Portland area a way to develop and showcase their talent around the country. Its local youth basketball program was catalyst for the basketball careers of Damon and Salim Stoudamire both would go on to start at the University of Arizona and continue to play in the NBA. Crescent Sports began to take shape as an organization that not only provided an opportunity for young people to be successful in sport, but also serve as way that you can still achieve success.

Aleem Shabazz began covering professional Muslim Athletes to inspire young athlete to achieve their dreams and let them know that there are people who made it to highest levels of sport, who look like them and came from the same environments that they came from.  Crescent Sports became a NBA, NFL credentialed media outlet that profiled Muslim Athletes, such as 2X NBA Champion Hakeem Olajuwon, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Ephraim Salaam and many others.

Brame and Shabazz, had always envisioned Crescent Sports as an organization that has the pulse, and the attention of the today’s youth and their culture, but also has the foresight to be relevant today and the future. So most recently they found a young man who shared their same core values, youthful spirit but also has the vision to keep Crescent Sports relevant now and in the future.

Crescent Sports Media is multi-media platform that not only promotes and profiles just Muslim Athletes, it shines light on the excellence that all athletes bring to sport.  We will focus not only on the success that athletes perform on the playing surface, but more importantly we want to promote the positive impact that athletes bring to lives and communities off the playing surfaces.

While other media outlets and platforms primarily focus on covering athletes on the playing surface, we choose to go more in the depth and bring the attention to the excellence of the athletes to the surface. We are like the moonlight that appears in darkness, thus we are called Crescent Sports Media.
